I don’t think it’s compulsory to do refresher courses. I think the recommendation of 5 years is probably for people that haven’t used the skills a lot and need reminding or to keep people from picking up bad habits over time. It’s only a short course to remind you of the best practices. I’d say it’s entirely up to you whether you need it or not, unless your employer insists on refreshing your microbiology,
The courses in Greenock are often cancelled due to low demand but if you get in touch and tell them you’re interested it’ll be more likely to go ahead. As for SSERC, I’ve not seen one advertised in a while. Could be to do with SSERC recently employing a new Education Manager for Biology. They had the same person running the microbiology courses for years but since they left the courses have been offered less frequently. I’m not aware of other SSERC accredited centers offering microbiology courses. Maybe check with the Technician Support Service in Glasgow or the Forth Valley College.
